Tips

Try this with peanut butter inside the dumpling and a spoonful of jam beside it on the plate for dipping. Or jam inside the dumpling. Or minced pieces of fruit. Or anything else sweet and wonderful you can think of.

You can also dust the dumplings with confectioner’s sugar.

Ingredients

  • Round wonton wrappers (or square if you can't find round ones)

  • Nutella

  • Vegetable oil

  • Pure maple syrup

Preparation

  1. Lay out a few wonton wrappers on a cutting board. Set a small dish of water next to the board. Spoon about ½ teaspoon of Nutella into the center of one wrapper. Dip your finger in the water, then run it along the outside rim of the wrapper to wet it.

  2. Bring all the edges of the dumpling to the center and pinch the top closed. Don’t try to make anything fancy; just close it like a sack of rice (see the illustration). Repeat until you have prepared as many dumplings as you want.

  3. To fry, use a wok or a saucepan so you won’t use a lot of oil to get about 1½ inches of oil in the pan. Heat the oil over medium-high heat until it’s very hot. (To test, pull a tiny bit off a wonton skin and toss it in. It should bubble and expand and turn brown in a few seconds.)

  4. Have a slotted spoon and a paper-towel-lined plate ready. Slide one dumpling into the hot oil and leave it just until the wonton skin turns golden brown and puffs a bit. It will just be a few seconds! You want to cook the wrapper but not the Nutella.

  5. If needed, roll the dumpling around in the oil a bit with your slotted spoon to make sure every side of the wonton skin cooks. Then remove the dumpling to the lined plate and repeat with the rest of the dumplings. This goes really fast, so don’t try to fry more than 2 or 3 at a time.

  6. Put the dumplings on serving plates and drizzle with a little maple syrup. Or serve the maple syrup in a small plate for dipping.
